She is happy to tailor presentations to specific interests and curriculums, or you may choose from one of the standard programs below. With some exceptions, appearance fees apply. PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH:
All youth programs can be adapted for different age groups, with middle- and high-school programs focusing on writing craft, and younger programs celebrating creativity. Dive in to A Field Guide to Mermaids Get your students excited about fusing science and fantasy! Learn how Emily researched, wrote, and illustrated mermaids in real aquatic environments, followed by an optional guided drawing program where participants can draw their own biology-inspired mer-person. The Fantastic and the Mundane, featuring Nell O'Dell Hates Quests What happens when a fantasy world and ordinary drudgery combine? This presentation explores the use of opposites in fiction to create tension and humor and includes a reading and discussion from Nell O'Dell Hates Quests. How Does a Book Become a Book? Perfect for teenagers, this program pulls from all of Emily's written and illustrated works to explore the general path a book takes before (and after!) it hits the shelves. Great for discussing story structure, outlines, rough drafts, giving and taking criticism, working under deadlines, patience, and perseverance! PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS:
Fiction as a Tool to Inspire Environmental Stewardship This program draws from Emily's environmental education background and uses examples from other authors to discuss how fiction can help build nature fluency and connection for young and adult readers, and why that matters in today's world. Insights into Writing and Publishing Great for book clubs and writers' workshops, this presentation offers a look at the process of drafting manuscripts, querying agents, and working with publishers, with personal experiences and lessons learned along the way. |
